Whether on an annual, quarterly, or monthly basis, every company strives to establish clear goals and strategy and for their organization. Setting the right goals can be the difference between a focused team and a chaotic one. While not all companies have the same objectives, establishing clear goals at every departmental level can help lead the company to clear alignment and success. This is where cascading goals come into play.

How do Cascading Goals Lead to Compound Success?

Cascading goals can lead to success and growth for not only the company, but everyone involved. For the company, cascading goals can lead to growth and higher sales for the organization. This is possible because cascading goals align the entire company towards one common goal. When every team and employee knows what the goals of the company are they are more likely to be motivated to work towards their individual goals.

For the individual employees, cascading goals can further their careers and skillsets. In order for cascading goals to work, the company must take the time to make sure that their employees have the needed skillset to complete their individual goals. This can be done by offering on-site training, professional development, continuing education classes, and mentoring. Mentor programs have shown great success for both the organization and employees. For the mentee, these programs can benefit them by increasing their job satisfaction, improving goal setting, and developing communication skills. In turn mentoring programs have also been shown to lead to improved employee retention and increased productivity for the entire organization.

How to Set up Cascading Goals

When implementing cascading goals into your company you must start with a clear goal at the top level. Without a clear strategic goal, it will be impossible for the departments to align their goals with one another. One way to make sure that your strategic goals are clear to everyone is to follow the S.M.A.R.T. method. S.M.A.R.T. stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.

Once your company-wide strategic goal is set up then it is time to start implementing the smaller goals within each department. Meet with your team leaders and members to get their perspectives on the company and learn where to make improvements within the department. Start setting department and individual goals based on these conversations.

Once the overall strategic goal, department goals, and individual goals are set then it is time to start working towards those goals. Check-in often with your team to make sure that they are on track with their goals and that the work they are doing is still aligned with the overall goal of the company.

Cascading goals can lead to success not only in your business but for your employees as well. Cascading goals align departments and individuals with the company’s larger goals and values. Implementation of cascading goals may take some extra time and work, but it can lead to great success.
